Joanne Chan

Director & Principal neurophysiotherapist

Biography

Joanne Chan is a neurophysiotherapist with over 15 years of clinical experience and a special interest in Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, stroke, vestibular rehabilitation, and neurological rehabilitation.

She founded Movement Rehabilitation Centre with a vision of providing specialised, patient-centred care for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. Joanne believes that every person living with Parkinson’s disease deserves access to specialised, evidence-based rehabilitation and the support needed to continue living a meaningful and active life.

Her approach combines evidence-based rehabilitation with a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by patients and their families, focusing not only on physical function but also on confidence, independence, participation, and quality of life. She is passionate about empowering individuals to remain active, engaged, and connected to the activities that matter most to them.

Prior to establishing the centre, Joanne worked at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore, where she specialised in neurological rehabilitation and was part of multidisciplinary teams managing complex neurological conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings. She also served as a lecturer, Head of Programme, and Head of Department at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), where she taught neurological rehabilitation, clinical reasoning, and physiotherapy practice while mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Joanne holds a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy (Neurorehabilitation) from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, and is a certified LSVT BIG clinician. She remains actively involved in advancing movement disorders care through professional education, mentorship, research, and community engagement.

She currently serves on the Allied Health Steering Committee of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society and has presented at the Asian & Oceanian Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder Congress. She regularly collaborates with movement disorder specialists, allied health professionals, and patient organisations to improve Parkinson’s care in Malaysia.

Beyond the clinic, Joanne is deeply committed to patient and caregiver education. She regularly conducts community talks, exercise programmes, professional training sessions, and educational activities for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their families. Through her work with healthcare organisations and the Malaysian Parkinson’s Disease Association, she hopes to build a stronger and more supportive Parkinson’s community in Malaysia.
